Since the late 1980’s, GEM elettronica has focused its R&D effort for the design and manufacture of mechanical gyrocompasses. In the year 2000, the company created a specialized facility for the development of photonic sensors which resulted in the manufacturing of the Interferometric Fiber Optic Gyroscope (IFOG).
Today GEM elettronica’s IFOG program includes a number of different models suitable for inertial navigation system used for Guidance, Navigation & Control in a wide range of military and commercial applications.

The GEM elettronica IFOG has unique advantages since they do not have moving parts, have extremely high bandwidth and are virtually insensitive to accelerations - therefore very suitable for applications of type strap down. In addition, the system ensures high reliability and long life, also in severe environmental and dynamic conditions.  

GEM elettronica has developed its own proprietary technology for the optical fiber winding methods, electronics, advanced navigation algorithms, software development, calibration and test capability. The Guidance, Navigation & Control products are designed at the Photonics Research & Applied Navigation Sciences (PRANS) Division, the research center of excellence in advanced sensor technologies and innovative solutions of GEM elettronica.

  “FOG” is the now widely used acronym for fiber optic gyrocompass, one of the most exciting technological advancements to have found its way aboard ships. The gyrocompass was invented in the late 1800s and has steered ships smartly for more than 100 years. But it is built on delicate electromechanical movements that depend on being serviced frequently. FOGs, however, devised just a few decades ago, have no moving parts and are therefore intrinsically reliable. A heading system first used just in military vessels, FOGs have now gone into large-scale production and are being fitted in more and more commercial vessels.
The owners of these ships see their gyro operating expenditures drop to nothing. Along with ship’s heading, FOGs produce ship’s roll and pitch angles. And settling is a matter of just a few minutes rather than 5 hours for spinning mass gyrocompasses.
GEM elettronica’s FOG program includes a number of different specification models and embraces inertial navigation systems too. GEM elettronica is the proprietary owner of all of its key FOG technologies, namely the fibre winding methods, electronics and mathematical algorithms.
