The in-house design and development of closed loop Fiber Optic Gyroscope allowed GEM elettronica to realize a new family of state-of-the-art Polaris gyrocompass navigation system based on unique strap-down technology. The Polaris FOG family is a precision heading and motion sensor fulfilling the multiple roles of ship’s marine gyrocompass and six degrees of freedom (6 DOF) motion sensor for use in ocean-graphics, hydrography, subsea survey and metrology. Designed with the very newest FOG techniques, it contains three mutually orthogonal fiber optic gyroscopes, three single-axis accelerometers, laser source, phase modulator, computer and advanced proprietary algorithms. It is a highly dependable and widely versatile inertial measurement unit (IMU) ideally suited to dynamic positioning (DP) systems. The Polaris family IMO, IMO-HSC certified gyrocompass provides highly reliable and cost effective solution for vessels subject to SOLAS regulations, are available in three different levels of system accuracy, are a maintenance free equipment with a MTBF more than 50.000 hours. Since its market introduction, POLARIS gyrocompass family, has been selected and trusted by several international navies and commercial vessels to provide reliable and extremely accurate heading, roll and pitch data. Furthermore, its affordable cost makes POLARIS gyrocompass particularly apt and adequate for installation on very fast off-shore patrol boats and catamarans. These capabilities and technological innovations are at the base of GEM elettronica POLARIS gyrocompass family, which is offered either as a stand-alone system or as integral part of a ship navigation system.
